Happy New Year everyone!

WHIRLWIND DAY

Last month in early December I had the weekend off at my home church – Brookfield Lutheran – where I continue to serve as the interim music director.  What did I do with my weekend off, you ask?  Well, I visited three different churches to assist with various music events.  Perhaps one could say I wanted to make up for lost time…

At the first church, I led three morning worship services with a new service titled “Preparing For Christmas,” which my husband Craig and I designed.  I’ve had a lot of practice in designing worship services the last year, and Craig has some gifts in tying together the messages of Scripture, sermons, and songs. :-)  We make a good team!

After packing up from that morning’s services, I headed down the road to a Ladies Advent Tea Program where I led 130 women in music to prepare our hearts for the Light of the World.  After another hour drive, I arrived at a second Advent Tea for women where I was the featured speaker and musician.  Do you know how much chocolate I could have consumed that day?  For any of you that have attended these kinds of events, you know that Christmas, women, and chocolate just go together!   It was wonderful to get out again to lead some new folks in worship and to sing a few of my original songs, as well as cover Faith Hill’s song “A Baby Changes Everything.”

JESUS PAINTING

One other highlight of the fall was watching Craig step into a new ministry role: a live speed painting of Jesus - during worship at our church.  Check out the video.  Note that for copyright reasons, we changed the songs on the video from what was sung during the actual painting.  You’ll notice the music you hear doesn’t match up with the words my mouth is forming – so part of it kind of looks like bad lip-syncing!

2011

I have agreed to continue serving as interim music director at my church until May.  I will be singing most Sundays – feel free to come and say hello!  When I do get a free weekend, I hope to resume our traveling ministry wherever the Lord will open a door.   What a joy to be on this exciting and unknown journey!

Dear friends,

My traveling music ministry has been on hold for much of this year as I continue my position as interim worship director at my home church, Brookfield Lutheran Church (BLC). This has been an exciting job, and a great blessing for me to serve God and His people!  Here are some more details…

Worship Director

When I first started in this position last November, I thought I would just be selecting songs, rehearsing with the musicians, and leading worship on Sundays for a couple months.  It’s been all that, and much more!  I’ve had the challenge of working with a different set of musicians and singers each week, as well as recruiting and training new musicians.  I’ve become involved in planning, writing, and performing in drama skits (dusting off my acting skills from my younger years), and adding extra special things to the services like choir/praise team duets, dance, and live painting – there are so many ways for God’s people to praise Him and a wealth of talents to utilize in any congregation.   This means extra planning meetings, rehearsals, and evaluations for improvement, which all take time.  The development of relationships, the musical growth of learning to sing/play new songs, and the spiritual encouragement to me has been a tremendous blessing.

My church is in the process of interviewing for the permanent full time director and I hope he/she will be in place in the New Year.  I will continue in this interim position until then.

October 10 Concert Event

I do have an exciting concert event scheduled for October 10 at 6:00pm at BLC.  I get to  open the concert with a live band, performing both original and familiar songs, and there will be a guest appearance by the children of BLC.  The concert headliner is Scott Riggan, a national recording artist and international performer www.scottriggan.com.  If you listen to Christian radio, you might remember Scott’s #1 radio song “I Love You, Lord” from a few years ago when. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81lvIgnidOU

Those in the Milwaukee area, please mark your calendars!  This is a great opportunity to attend a high-quality event - and to invite a friend who hasn’t experienced this type of thing before.  The concert is free with a gift offering being received that night.

My real life fairy tale…

Once upon a time there was a Christian singer who made a big change in her life.  She and her family joined a new church, a new church body, and sent their kids to a new school all at the same time.

This singer tried for weeks to book concert events and worship services at the churches in her new ‘family’, but was having some trouble.  Finally, she threw her hands up in the air, and said to God “I just want to sing for you!  Please, I just want to sing for you!”

The next month, God provided an answer when she was asked by her pastors at her new church to be the interim worship coordinator (there had been a recent illness and resignation).  Suddenly she was choosing music, writing service formats, scheduling dozens of musicians, and rehearsing and singing almost every night!   This turned into nearly a full time job in the month of December with the extra worship services in preparation for the celebration of Jesus’ birthday.

Soon after came Lent and looking ahead to Easter, which is truly the busiest time of the church year for worship.  She embraced this season and did her best to keep her head above water, (and keep clean clothes on her children, as well as home-cooked meals on the family table – does frozen pizza count?) - all the while being wonderfully appreciated by many at church, and supported by her husband at home.  She’s not sure how long this interim position will last, but is praising God for His faithfulness and for every opportunity to bring Him glory.

This is why I have not been traveling to sing much the last few months.  If you check my website calendar, you will find almost every Sunday booked with worship leading at Brookfield Lutheran.  But please visit my site wendysue.com for some other highlights:

- A new video on the homepage of me and my daughter Miranda’s duet.

- Free downloads of every song on my 1st CD “No Tears Past the Gate.”

- Individual downloads ($.99) of songs from my other two original CDs.

There are two other new ways to hear (and see) my music:

- Click this Youtube link to see a video of my song ”I Believe” put to a special picture presentation.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tk-4XYHAcXE

-My church made a live audio recording at a worship service of  “Alive in Jesus,” a song I wrote for a recent sermon series.  http://www.brookfieldlutheran.org/Worship.htm – scroll down to “Original Music Samples.”

“Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7

I hope to see or hear from you soon, Wendysue

November 2009 Newsletter

Hello friends,

It’s been a summer and fall of change for my ministry and life, as I’m moving into a new season.  Check out my rough “New Season” song at wendysue.com on the home page video.

News

I recently took on my first beginning guitar students, and have been challenging myself to improve my own guitar playing.  In addition, I am writing some new songs on piano, and still teaching private piano and vocal lessons to about 20 students, as well as singing about two weekends a month.

Another new addition this fall is more involvement in my music ministry by my two children.  Our 10 year old daughter Miranda played piano at a worship service with me for the first time last month, and she and I are preparing a singing duet for future concerts.  Our 8 year old son Collin works with his Dad on running the sound system and iPod, and adjusting volume levels.

Church Change Update

In my last newsletter from August, I informed you that my family is searching for a new local church.  I appreciate your concern, your prayers, and the 100+ personal emails I received.

Here is the latest update on this topic:  My family has been attending Brookfield Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod), and my husband Craig and I have been taking membership classes there.  We are happy to discover that the theology is solidly Biblical, the teaching from the pastors and in Bible class equips us well, the philosophy of ministry is outward-focused, and the worship is inspiring!  We are beginning to get more involved in small group Bible study, worship leading, and the children’s  Life-in-Jesus programs.  We will become official members in December.

Going Forward

This church change hurts my music ministry, at least in the short term, as I am no longer allowed to sing in most WELS churches.  My goals, however, remain unchanged: to encourage people in word and song to live their faith, and to assist churches with contemporary-flavored worship.

I am thankful for the blessings of countless WELS pastors, churches, and people that have strengthened me spiritually since childhood, and supported my music ministry the past 13 years.

I welcome the new opportunities God will provide, and am excited about this new adventure in my walk of faith.  I am eager to discover the many ways that God will bless my family and His people as we go forward.   Now, let me spur you on to continue serving Him in your personal mission field with the gifts He’s given you.  Hebrews 10:24-25

Trip to Montana

nationalforestI just returned from singing in MONTANA for a short but sweet weekend.  Thanks to Pastor Ken in Livingston and Pastor Brown in Bozeman for having me and chauffeuring me around.  The Spirit was active in encouraging those who attended the concert and worship service.  Before heading home, the Browns took me hiking in Gallatin national forest.  We occasionally jutted off the beaten path to explore the mini trails and look for hungry bears.  Good thing we didn’t see any!

Plane Witnessing

As usual, the Lord prepared some divine appointments on my plane flights, and I was able to make some neat connections:   There was a young newly-married Christian couple who shared some breakfast time with me during our lay-over in Chicago.  We talked of travel, adventure, church worship, and creation.  My CD made a nice little wedding gift and we plan to be in touch.  Then there was Marty, a business-man who raises show dogs, and was heading to a Nascar race for fun.  He wasn’t sure where he’d go if he died, although he hoped it would be heaven.  The Lord enabled me to share the assurance of heaven because of Jesus’ sacrifice for each of us, and also to encourage him regarding hisbrothersister widowed mother. Finally, I met a teenage brother and sister heading to Montana for a fly-fishing vacation.  They both do hurdles competitively, and shared some athletic wisdom as we discussed my daughter’s hurdling interest.  The young man is also an aspiring drummer, so we chatted about music, but I chickened out giving him a CD since he likes hard rock…

My New Website

In other news, my WEBSITE has been re-designed!  Besides being more organized and interesting to look at (I hope), I’d like to specifically highlight a couple things for you to go and check out…  First, you will notice a short video on the home page to watch.  I will be updating this video monthly with the latest news or live song recording, so plan to go back to my website regularly.  Second, all the music from my five CDs is organized on the “music” page.  You can listen to 30-second-clips of every song, purchase digital downloads of individual songs ($0.99) from my two most popular CDs, and download every song from my first CD, “No Tears Past the Gate,” for FREE!  I also have seven singing events in the next 5 weeks, so check out the “Events Calendar” too – all at wendysue.com

May God’s peace surround you this week, and give you strength and courage to share the good news of Jesus in your community!

Your sister in Christ, Wendysue
